VISIBOX FAQs

Questions, frequently asked:

Is there a free trial available?

Yes! You can download the full version of Visibox from our website. Once activated, you will have 14 days to test the application. The trial version is fully functional and, other than the watermark on the Output window, exactly the same as the fully licensed version.

What are the system requirements for Visibox?

On Macintosh, Visibox requires MacOS 10.15 (Catalina) or better.

On Windows, we recommend Windows 10 or better.

There are no hardware requirements, however higher resolution content and more complex Projects may require a more performant drive and CPU/GPU.

Does Visibox run natively on Apple Silicon Macs?

Yes! Visibox is a "universal" application optimized for both older Intel Macs and newer M1/M2/M3 Macs.

How many computers can I install Visibox on?

A single Visibox subscription allows you to activate it on up to two (2) computers at a time. If you want to activate it on a third computer, you will need to deactivate one of your existing computers. If you would like to be able to install Visibox on more than two computers simultaneously, just purchase more subscriptions using the same email address.

How often does Visibox need to connect to the Internet to stay activated?

Visibox is a professional tool designed for gigging performers. We realized that many performers will install Visibox on a laptop as a part of their live rig which may not connect to wifi regularly. For this reason, we try to give you ample notice before the app stops working.

Monthly-billed Visibox subscriptions will need to connect to the Internet once every 30 days to stay activated. Annually-billed Visibox subscriptions only need to connect to the Internet every 6 months to stay activated. In both cases, Visibox will remind you to connect to the Internet before your activation stops working. If you are unable to connect to the Internet immediately, you will still be able to use Visibox for a few days before it stops working.

Can I trigger Visibox from a MIDI controller?

Yes! You can trigger clips, increment songs, and control most functionality with any MIDI controller which can send MIDI note messages. You can use the default MIDI note map or you can “learn” a custom mapping using Visibox’s MIDI mapping functionality.

Can I trigger Visibox from a drum pad?

Yes! This is a great way to trigger content. You can use any MIDI drum pad that sends MIDI notes. This includes the Roland SPD SX or Octapad, Alesis SamplePad or Strike, Roland V-Drums, KAT products, Yamaha DTX and others. If it can send MIDI notes, it should work.

Will Visibox react to my music?

Visibox is designed to be played by triggering clips in real time, either with the computer keyboard, mouse, or a MIDI device. It does not play itself. There is not a way to have it “listen” to audio and have it affect the output content. However, videos or images can be triggered and retriggered on the beat to create an organic performance which plays in time with your music. Visibox's retriggering options include several rhythmic options such as "restart", "stutter", and "scratch", which make just about any video content feel customized to the music. You can also connect Visibox to a MIDI sequencer such as Ableton Live and trigger clips via MIDI in that way.

Can Visibox do transitions or fades between video/image clips?

Yes! This is currently a "beta" feature, so be sure to select "Enable Beta Features" from the "Settings" menu on Windows or the "Preferences" menu on Mac. Once enabled, you can set a Fade In and Fade Out transition time for each Clip.

Can I use Visibox on a computer with a single screen?

Yes. This is a fine way to create and arrange a project – backstage before a performance, for example. However, for the performance itself, you will want two screens in order to present both the Controller (which the performer sees) and the Output (which the audience sees) at the same time. Most performers will simply connect their laptop to a video projector. The Controller then shows the song listing and clip previews while the Output shows full-screen on the video projector displaying the content that the audience sees.

What type of video projector works with Visibox?

We’ve designed Visibox to work with the widest array of video projectors possible. The app allows you to flip, rotate, and crop the output in a multitude of ways to allow you to use a wide variety of video projectors with a wide variety of functionality, aspect ratios, and capabilities. Rear projection? No problem. Upside-down, ceiling mounted projector? Easy. You can even flip the projector on its side and show your content vertically if you want!

The more challenging part is usually connecting the video projector to your computer. A video projector with an HDMI connection is usually pretty easy to connect to most modern computers. However, older video projectors can often be connected with various inexpensive adapters. Chances are that your going to need some kind of adapters – HDMI to USB-C, HDMI to mini-HDMI, DVI to HDMI, VGA to HDMI, etc., etc.

Can I use Visibox with a TV instead of a video projector?

Yep! Just get a HDMI adapter (if needed) for your computer and you should be able to easily connect to any TV made within the past 20 years.

Can I send video wirelessly to a television or video projector?

If you have a Mac and an Apple TV, you can use Apple's "AirPlay" to use the Apple TV as a second monitor connected over wifi. We don't recommended using this in a live performance situation as there is some latency and it is not as reliable as a hard-wired connection. But it's a great way to test out and rehearse with Visibox.

What do I need to do to prepare my video content for use with Visibox?

Not much! That's the whole idea behind Visibox. You can build rich content for an entire song by looping just a few short video clips. Visibox will resize your content and crop it to fit the screen. You can choose to have videos loop or play once through in a variety of different ways.

Can I use Visibox to show live camera content to the audience?

Yes. You can connect any number of webcams to your computer and switch between them and video/image content at any time. Drum solo? Switch to the drummer cam. Kazoo solo? Kazoo cam! Tap dancing break? You get the idea.

Can I use Visibox to run my backing tracks?

Yes! This is a GREAT way to use Visibox. Each song can have an audio track associated with it. This way you can switch visual content over the audio track. You can edit together a music video in real time. And switch to the foot camera for that amazing tap dance solo in the middle sixteen.

Since Visibox can loop videos, can I use to as an audio looper as well?

Visibox is not designed as an audio looper and you will probably find that audio does not loop as seamlessly as you might like. Video clips ususally play back at 30 frames per second (fps). If this video has an audio track, the maximum resolution that you have for your loop point is 1/30th of a second. This is usually too low a resolution to feel like the beat is continuous. By contrast, most audio files use a resolution of 48,000 samples per second, so creating a seamless audio-only loop is a lot easier than creating a seamless-sounding audio loop from a video clip.

What kind of images, video, and audio files can I use with Visibox?

Visibox has a built-in media file conversion system. So files using incompatible formats will attempt to be converted automatically. However, this can sometimes be a slow process.

The following is a list of formats that Visibox supports natively (without conversion).

Video file formats and extensions:

  • MP4 / MPEG4 (mp4, m4v, mpeg, mpg, mpv, m4p)

Media files in other formats may be supported through Visibox's conversion library.

What types of cameras and webcams can I use with Visibox?

Visibox uses the OS's native webcam support. So you can use any standard USB webcam. Additionally, you can connect higher-quality cameras with HDMI-to-USB adapters like the Elgato Cam Link.

Can I use virtual camera software such as Snap Camera or EpocCam with Visibox?

Yes. Virtual camera applications pretend to be hardware webcams connected to your computer. They can act as a processor for an existing webcam – like Snap, allowing you to to modify your webcam image (changing backgrounds or putting on virtual hats). A virtual camera such as EpocCam will allow you to use your phone as a camera for Visibox – as long as both the phone and computer are on the same network.

Do you have tutorials or an online manual?

Funny you should ask. Yes! We have both of those things. Subscribe to our YouTube Channel and learn about Visibox functionality, as well as creative ideas for using the app, and information about the video projectors, MIDI triggers, and the other equipment you might want to use with Visibox.

You can also find the Visibox manual online here. This manual is also included in Visibox's Help menu.

I'm having trouble installing on Windows. How can I fix this?

The Windows installer for Visibox is a standard .exe file. However, if you launch it more than once, it can cause problems and you may get an error message or two. We're working on fixing this, but in the meantime, here's how to fix it:

  1. Close all instances of the installer. The simplest way to do this is to restart your computer. However, if you don't want to restart, you can:
    • Open the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
    • Find the installer in the list of processes and click "End Task".
  2. Re-launch the installer by right-clicking and selecting "Open" or "Open File". This will ensure that you don't launch more than once.
